LIFECYCLE

BEREAVEMENTS

First, you should IMMEDIATELY please notify the United Synagogue Burial Office on 020 8950 7767, leaving your name, the name of the deceased and a contact phone number. Their office is staffed throughout the week and on Sunday mornings. There is also an out of hours service – details of which will be available on their answerphone message. You may have to make a second call but there will always be someone to speak to. Please also call the Shul office 020 8455 8126, choosing option 1.

For detailed guidance on how to arrange a burial, please consult the appropriate section of the United Synagogue website: https://theus.org.uk/resources/death-and-burial/

Should you wish, the Rabbinic team can give you our “Never Forgotten – A Jewish Guide to Death and Mourning”.

The Burial Society will confirm a date and time for the funeral when all the correct official documentation has been received. They will advise you of everything you need and will guide you sensitively through the process.

Once the funeral arrangements have been made, the Burial Office will liaise with the Rabbi and Shul Office who will assist with every aspect of the funeral and shiva. You’ll also find guidance on sitting shiva on the US website: https://theus.org.uk/resources/death-and-burial/. HGSS can provide chairs for the mourners and copies of the shiva prayer book.

The Rabbinical Team will be available throughout to support you and guide you through the arrangements for the funeral service and shiva.

The office will send out a notification to all members to advise them of the bereavement and the relevant arrangements.
